The Full Spectrum of Education, Research, and Partnership

From its creation, the University of Waterloo has been deeply involved in education and research. The University has an unparalleled record of spawning new companies and otherwise capitalizing on its many research accomplishments for the benefit of society.

The Department offers undergraduate degrees in the core areas of Electrical Engineering and Computer Engineering and jointly runs three unique, interdisciplinary undergraduate programs in Software Engineering, Mechatronics and Nanotechnology. Combined, we have over 2000 students, all of whom are enrolled in our cooperative education program which is the largest in the world.

The department is also home to more than 680 graduate students. Graduate studies offers students the choice of several core areas of specialization and the opportunity to study emerging disciplines such as sustainable energy, nanotechnology and biomedical engineering.

The ECE department offers an outstanding research environment in two recently completed new buildings with world-class research laboratories. Our 69 faculty members, including 14 research Chairs, attracted $11.9 million in research funding in 2005/6. And we are growing. The faculty is expanding to 92 by 2010 by which time graduate enrolment is planned to increase by over 100 students.

Finally, UW's "Inventor-Owned" intellectual property policy has made us a leader in technology transfer and creator of spin-off companies. As a result we have a rich history of industry partnership and play a central role in Canada's Technology Triangle.
