Exceptionally productive relationships can evolve into a full, on-campus presence. For example, the Nortel Networks Institute, The Microsoft On-Line Learning Initiative (MOLI) and the Lietch Multimedia Lab.
Many partners have benefited by leveraging their sponsorship money through federal and provincial research funding programs. In some cases, for every $1 provided by a company, the funding programs will match up to three times the sponsorship in order to maximize the research opportunity. Through these and other sources, the department generated almost $12 million in funding in support research excellence.

We are the largest undergraduate school of engineering in Canada. We run the largest cooperative educational program in the World. Within our department, we have 2000+ ECE undergraduates and 350+ ECE graduate students. You can hire them for a term, mentor them through their Design Projects, support one of their many clubs or sponsor a scholarship.
There is no better way to build a "talent trust" for your company.
Through the World's largest cooperative educational program, Waterloo offers over 3500 employer partners the opportunity to tap the knowledge and skills of 11,000 of the most work-ready students in Canada. As a result, Waterloo co-op students earn nearly $100 million each year and employers access an intelligent, mobile work force. Often imitated, but never duplicated, the University of Waterloo blends academia with the working world to create an immeasurable student and employer advantage.
Over 250 fourth year ECE students in 60 teams will partner with industry every year to complete a comprehensive 4th year Design Project that integrates their knowledge and skill. Design project topics have included wireless and Bluetooth systems, radio frequency and infra-red systems, digital systems, network cards, network encryption systems, anti-piracy systems, large scale World Wide Web base applications, micropayment systems, active map systems, production management systems, voice controlled systems, location tracking systems, plant efficiency systems, and robot control systems. Some projects also have societal impacts, such as vision and hearing aid advances.
A pioneer in commercial friendly partnering, the University of Waterloo is a leader in University Spin-off companies in Canada. Our "Inventor-Owned" Intellectual Property Policy has made it easy for researchers to partner with investors and industry to commercialize ideas and patents. Many of the Country's best hi-tech companies trace their roots to the department of ECE, including RIM, Dalsa, Slipstream and OpenText.
It is easy to do business with Waterloo. Easy to find researchers with a commercial perspective, easy to build proposals and easy to move IP from the bench to the market place.
Partnering with ECE also builds on a wider network. There exists a cooperative and collaborative spirit through our joint programs with other departments, our affiliations with key Research Institutes and our role in economic development within Canada's Technology Triangle.
This is the right place to partner. The City of Waterloo is one of the hottest cities in Canada to found a company, develop technology and access talent. Waterloo was voted one of the Top Intelligent Communities in the World in 2006, specifically for building a knowledge-based workforce, encouraging innovation, deploying broadband and bridging the digital divide.
You will find an "ecosystem" of Communities, Universities and Venture Capitalists supporting a pervasive Entrepreneurial Culture.
Let us connect you to Waterloo.
There is a reason why we are the largest Engineering school in Canada. There is a reason why the University of Waterloo is the only Canadian University stop on Bill Gates' Microsoft tour. There is a reason why we've been ranked "best overall" and "most innovative" in national rankings survey's. There is a reason why no other Canadian University has created so many spin-off companies.
Talk to one of our Partners. Or better yet, come for a visit and see for yourself.
