New Faces: Patrick Lam

Patrick joined the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering on January 1, 2008 as an Assistant Professor. Before coming to UW, Patrick held an NSERC postdoctoral fellowship at McGill University following his graduate studies at MIT.

His research interests centre on the applications of static analysis to software engineering applications: how can compiler techniques help developers reason about program behaviour and thereby produce higher-quality software more quickly? His past research has developed techniques for the static analysis of tracematches, a runtime monitoring notation for Java, and for verifying that programs conform to set-based specifications.

Having grown up in Canada, Patrick is well aware of the stellar reputation of UW's undergraduate engineering programmes---a great opportunity to teach strong students---and looks forward to being a key part of the planned expansion of its graduate progammes. "This is a great time in UW's history to recruit excellent graduate students and to do some excellent research." When not working, Patrick is most likely training for upcoming judo tournaments or climbing mountains.
