All-Optical Bio-molecular Computing with Photochromic Proteins

Abstract:
The main challenge at present is to achieve all-optical information processing, to eliminate the electronic bottleneck and to meet the anticipated demand for ultra-high bandwidth ultra-high speed communication and computing. This powerful capability requires an efficient nonlinear optical material response.

Since light sustains life on earth, diverse systems such as plants, seaweeds, and photo-synthesizing bacteria absorb ambient light to perform a variety of important functions. During the past decade, there has been extraordinary progress in identifying and characterizing ultrasensitive natural photoreceptor proteins in a broad range of organisms to understand the signal transduction pathways and get an insight into their multifunctional response. The prospect of using their efficient nonlinear optical response, optimized over centuries of evolution, for photonic applications, is extremely fascinating. Moreover, with the powerful capabilities of nano and biotechnologies, their photo-response can also be tailored to meet desired specifications.

The talk would focus on some of our recent experimental and theoretical results on all-optical switching in the unique natural photoreceptor molecules, namely, archael rhodopsin proteins, such as, bacteriorhodopsin (BR), pharaonis phoborhodopsin (a sensory rhodopsin II) and the recently discovered proteorhodopsin; plant based blue light sensitive LOV2 phototropin, photoactive yellow protein (PYP) and chlorophyll-A, based on excited-state absorption and protein-coated ultrahigh-Q microresonator cavities. We would also compare their performance with other organic molecules such as fullerenes, organometallics and organic dyes.

We will discuss its application to design all-optical low-power biomolecular boolean and reversible/conservative arithmetic and logic devices and circuits that include, spatial light modulators, logic gates (NAND, NOR, Fredkin, Toffoli, Feynman and Peres. etc.), adder-subtractor, MUX/DE-MUX, ALU and PLAs.

The talk would highlight (i) the emergence of a new class of photonic materials, (ii) the prospects for optical biomolecular computing and (iii) the application of nano and biotechnologies for information technology (Nano-Bio-Photonics), a unique amalgamation of the three modern age thrust areas.

Biography:
Sukhdev Roy obtained the B.Sc. (Hons.) degree in Physics from Delhi University, in 1986, M.Sc. degree in Physics with specialization in Electronic Science, from Dayalbagh Educational Institute, Agra, in 1988, and Ph.D. degree in Physics, from Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, India, in 1993.

He was a Senior Research Assistant at the Department of Physics, Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, from 1988 to 1989. Since 1993, he has been with the Department of Physics and Computer Science, Dayalbagh Educational Institute, Agra, where he is at present an Associate Professor. He has been a Visiting Scientist for short terms during summer at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai, India, 2002-2004; at Osaka University, 2006, Harvard University, 2007 and 2009 and at Queen Mary, University of London, 2009. His areas of interest are nano-photonics, bio-molecular computing and all-optical information processing.

Dr. Roy is a Fellow of the Optical Society of India, Life Member of the National Academy of Sciences, India, Member of IEEE, the Optical Society of America, Sigma Xi, Indian Science Congress Association, Indian Laser Association, Institution of Electronics and Telecommunications, India, and the Biosensor Society, India and Member Technologist, Institution of Engineers (India). He was awarded the 1st B.B. Sen Memorial Award by the Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers, India in 2007, the Hari Ohm Ashram Prerit Shri H.C. Shah Research Endowment Prize by Sardar Patel University, India in 2008, Best Paper Presentation Awards by the Indian Science Congress Association in 2000 and 2001 and by the Systems Society of India in 1995 and 2008. He was awarded the SERC Visiting Research Fellowship to the Department of Aerospace Engineering, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, in 1998; the Career Award for Young Teachers by the All-India Council for Technical Education, India, in 2001 and the Japan Society for Promotion of Science Invitation Fellowship to Hokkaido University, Sapporo, Japan, in 2004.

He is the Guest Editor of the forthcoming IET CDS (UK) special issue on Optical Computing Circuits, Devices and Systems in 2010, and is also on the Editorial Board of Recent Patents on Signal Processing and the Journal of Electronic Science and Technology. He has given invited talks/seminars at leading universities in USA, UK, Canada, Germany and Japan. He has published more than 100 papers in journal and conference proceedings and has contributed three book chapters. He was an invited speaker at the Annual Meeting of the American Physical Society, New Orleans, in March, 2008. He also delivered the Keynote Address at the International Conference on Nanotechnology, Optoelectronics and Photonic Technologies (NOPT-2010), at Singapore, Feb 26-28, 2010.
