Abstract:
Novel properties often emerge in low-dimensional materials at the nanoscale which, in many instances, can be exploited to enhance the performance of devices useful for a wide variety of electronic and optical applications. In this talk, I will present our approaches for capitalizing on the exceptional electronic, optical and mechanical properties of carbon-based nanomaterials for exciting applications. These applications range from highly efficient optical absorbers for radiometry and energy harnessing, nano-electromechanical-systems (NEMS) for sensing and harsh environment electronics, and miniaturized physical sensors for vacuum microcavity applications. Finally, ultra-thin, 1-2 nm thick metal nitrides and oxides in quantum-scale devices have enabled microwave detection and high-frequency digital circuit applications.
