How I produced the book illustrations

Several years ago before the extensive possibilities that now exist were available, in the course of writing a book (no, not this one, but: Implicit Linear Systems, Springer-Verlag, 1991) I took a few days off to write a pic-language interpreter to augment the LaTeX drawing commands. I've also developed macros in the m4 language for elementary electric circuits and other line diagrams. It seemed natural to produce all the illustrations for this book using the pic language, m4, and the PSTricks package for LaTeX.
