Announcement of an important and timely event
presented by the IEEE Toronto Section of the
Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers
Issued September 20, 2003
IEEE Toronto Centennial Forum on Reliable Power Grids in Canada
THE AUGUST 2003 BLACKOUT - How secure is our electrical grid?
A unique opportunity for members of the Institute and the
general public to hear four power systems experts from three
provinces address this important issue on Friday evening, October 3,
2003, 6:30 to 9:00 p.m. at the Marriott Bloor Yorkville hotel.
The forum will briefly cover the power blackout on August 14, 2003,
assess the current status, and examine the challenges involved in
ensuring reliable operation of our power grid.
Our speakers are key power industry experts from British Columbia,
Qu‰bec, and Ontario (The IMO and Hydro One).
IEEE Toronto notes its appreciation and gratitude of these industry
leaders in supporting our technical activities and our Centennial
celebrations.
We are delighted that we are able to organize this timely forum to
review the August 2003 blackout, the major ice storm in Quebec and
various utility inter-tie practices with AC and DC transmission.
We encourage our members and guests to attend this forum that will
span two and a half hours and have a better understanding of our
grid reliability and lessons learned from operating such a complex
network in today's competitive environment.
Attendees will have the opportunity to meet with the speakers over
a light supper which will be provided at 6:30 p.m., prior to the
presentations and discussions between 7:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m.
To register for this (no-charge) event, contact Rabiz Foda via
telephone at 905 813 9372 or via e-mail at "foda@computer.org".
