PEOPLE

Director: Dr. Karim S. Karim received his Ph.D. (electrical engineering) from the University of Waterloo (Canada). He was an assistant Professor in the School of Engineering Science at Simon Fraser University from February 2003 to June 2007. Recently, he joined the University of Waterloo. He has published over 80 articles in journals and conferences and has received three national awards in Canada for his contributions to the field of medical imaging: the NSERC Doctoral Prize, the CAGS-UMI Distinguished Dissertation award, and the Douglas Colton medal. Recently, he was a co-recipient of the 2004 IEE Institution Premium Best Journal Paper Award. In the past four years, he and his students have received three Best Poster awards at the SPIE International Medical Imaging Symposium, the SMC Industrial Collaboration Award at TEXPO 2006 as well as the 2006 Best Paper award at the 18th Canadian Medical and Biological Engineering Society conference.

Michael Adachi, PhD candidate Michael is a PhD candidate in the ECE department, University of Waterloo. Amir Goldan, PhD candidate Amir H. Goldan is pursuing his PhD Degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Waterloo, Waterloo, ON. He obtained a B.A.Sc. degree in engineering science with a minor in computing science at Simon Fraser University, Vancouver, BC. His research interests include integrated mixed-signal circuit design, radiation detection, high-energy physics, photon devices, and gamma-ray imaging. Mr. Goldan has received the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) of Canada Postgraduate Scholarship, the 2006 Strategic Microelectronics Council Industrial Collaboration Award, and the Honorable Mention Poster Award at the SPIE Medical Imaging Symposium in 2006. Afrin Sultana, PhD candidate Afrin Sultana is a PhD candidate in the department of Electrical & Computer Engineering at the University of Waterloo. She obtained her M.A.Sc. degree in 2004 from the University of Waterloo in Electrical & Computer Engineering. She received a B.A.Sc. degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering in 2002 from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) where she stood 1st among 116 graduating students. Her current research interests include circuit design and optimization using amorphous silicon technology for digital imaging of protein diffraction pattern, physics of avalanche in amorphous material, and medical X-ray imaging. Afrin received the Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS) in 2007-2008, and the Best Student Paper Award in the Symposium on Circuits, Devices and Systems of IEEE Canadian Conference on Electrical and Computer Engineering, 2008.
