Our last stop on Thursday afternoon was found by following some
signs we saw throughout the streets of the Parque Florestal de
Monsanto: a placed called Ajuda. This turned out to be the
most recent royal palace which is now a national monument
— a most fitting end to our journey.
We began walking through the palace, trying to read the small A4-sized
information sheets, however, we were interrupted by this kindly-mannered
older lady who asked us if we were interested in a tour. She was a
volunteer guide in the palace. She took us throughout the palace and
told fascinating stories of the history of Lisboa, the Royals, and the
Palace.
When the tour ended, we went back to the car to try to scrape together
some money to thank her, and we caught her at the door as she was going
home. She insisted that we give the money to UNICEF, though we did ask
her for her picture with Sherry.
A picture of the bridge over which we had just recently driven and which was taken from the Parque Florestal de Monsanto.
Our perfect guide.
