Visual aids are meant to support a presentation. They should not be expected to, nor to inadvertently, replace the speaker or focus the attention of the audience.
To provide a good set of slides, they must be consistent and have a pleasing but not outstanding look and feel. This includes the choice of colour scheme, the choice of background, and giving sufficient attention to slide-to-slide continuity.
