Complaints Committee

Updated for 2010 Changes to the Professional Engineers Act

These web pages have been updated to include both enacted and pending changes due to the Open for Business Act, 2010. Note that some changes will not be in force until proclaimed by the Lieutenant Governor; for example, the putting into force the end of the industrial exemption has been delayed numerous times.

A summary of the relevant statutes and regulations: Complaints_Committee.pdf [1, 2].

When members of the public has a concern regarding the actions or conduct of a practitioner (either the holder of a licence or a certificate of authorization), they begin the process by filing a complaint using the Complaint Form. This document is submitted to the Registrar who acknowledges receipt and forward a copy to the associated practitioner. This is followed by an investigator reviewing the complaint, determining if it falls within the jurisdiction of PEO, possibly obtaining an independent report, and filing a complaint summary. The summary is then forwarded to the Complaints Committee who may direct that the matter be referred to the Discipline Committee; determine that the matter is not appropriate for reference to the Discipline Committee and dismiss it; or:

  • Attempt to have the practitioner voluntarily address the issues in the complaint,
  • Provide non-disciplinary recommendations, advice, or cautions to the practitioner,
  • Request an interview with the practitioner, or
  • Direct the investigator to obtain further information for future consideration [3].

The PEO Making a Complaint: A Public Information Guide is a pamphlet publish in order to explain the process of making a complaint to the public.
